Art, Art and More Art!
Art is the heart of San Miguel de Allende.
How did SMA evolve into such a magnificent art community?
Sterling Dickinson
An American artist from Chicago, Sterling arrived in SMA in 1937 and it quickly became a magnet for artists. After WWII US veterans were permitted to study abroad under the G.I. Bill and people began to converge on San Miguel de Allende.
Today, SMA is an international art scene. More than 100 galleries are scattered throughout the city. It doesn't stop with the painted medium. Textiles, sculpture, murals, music and theater and much more.

The La Aurora Textile Factory was one of San Miguel de Allende's most important industrial operations from it's opening in 1902 to it's closure in 1991. In 2004, it was revived into the fabulous art establishment that it is today. Some of the historical machines and pipes are still on display. Here you can find everything from paintings, sculptures, antiques to mixed-media, and jewelry in the 50 galleries within.

DaNisha Sculpture, a couple married in life and art! Dan, the sculptor, and Nisha, the painter, have been collaborating and creating ceramic and bronze sculpture since 1991, blending the classical with the whimsical.
The paintings of Merry Calderoni are adventures into mazes or puzzles, with unknown content and without a plan. The end product will be the result of fitting together the pieces of the puzzle, or getting through the maze with many varieties of tools and mediums, using colors, textures, lines, gestures, forms and other elements to complete the final painting.

Dawn Gaskill is a self taught artist living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She has traveled throughout the world and studied many cultures and discovered her passion for color, texture, symbolism and art. The symbolism, images, ancient texts and belief systems from these different cultures are the inspiration for her work. Her original work is encaustic medium that she paints with a torch.

Consider an Art Adventure during your stay.
Perhaps you would like a private visit to an artist studio; maybe two? A demonstration and talk to the artist, then a trip to Fabric La Aurora. You will be transported to the site and then have the afternoon to explore and perhaps enjoy the restaurants there.
If you are lucky enough to be here on the 1st Saturday of the month, then you are in for a treat! Fabrica la Aurora hosts an "Art Walk". All the galleries are open and often the artists are there to talk to you. If this is the Art Adventure you are looking for, look no further!
